Having to worry about a virus brings new levels of concern to expectant mothers
Being pregnant is supposed to be filled with lots of joy and wonderful expectations! Of course there are things every expectant mother worries about, but having to worry about a virus that is causing a global pandemic brings a whole new level of concern.
COVID-19 is continually changing, as well as, recommendations doctors are making to expectant mothers. One thing that remains the same is that an expectant mother needs to remain diligent in terms of what we know works:
- Social Distancing
- Wearing a mask
- Hand Washing
These 3 things top the list for everyone, but expectant mothers should really make an extra effort to make these happen. Another precaution to take is limiting contact with other individuals as much as possible. Other people the mother-to-be comes in contact with, such as extended family members, need to take these same precautions as well. That may not be easy, but it is critical to staying healthy.
Being homebound your entire pregnancy can be difficult and for lots of mothers, just not doable. Not everyone can work from home, and every mother needs pre-natal care. Plus, you need to get out for your mental health well-being as well. A walk outside in the fresh air can go a long way in keeping you happy!
Staying connected with other pregnant mothers can be a huge support. Being able to talk about similar things you are experiencing builds a support system that is invaluable.
Research is ongoing concerning pregnancy and COVID-19, but mothers should refrain from too much “data overload”. Staying positive is key to a healthy pregnancy and reading about research and studies continually may not be very helpful. COVID-19 is a very fluid virus that the experts are learning about every day. Stay educated and informed, but just don’t dwell on all that you read. Ask your doctor any questions you may have.
Being pregnant during a pandemic is probably definitely not what you planned or dreamed about, but with careful consideration of pre-cautions you can take, you can have a healthy, happy baby.

- Do not skip your prenatal care appointments.
- Limit your interactions with other people as much as possible.
- Take precautions to prevent getting COVID-19 when you do interact with others.
- Make sure that you have at least a 30-day supply of your medicines.
- Talk to your healthcare provider about how to stay healthy and take care of yourself during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- If you don’t have a healthcare provider, contact your nearest community health center or health department.
- Call your healthcare provider if you have any questions related to your health.
- Seek care immediately if you have a medical emergency.
